I climbed to the top of the cobble-stoned village, and discovered a little antique shop with a sweet little old man.
I had never been so enchanted!
I left with one of the greatest treasures of my life. It was a wall mounted Ship's Candlestick that pivots with the movement of an ancient sailing vessel, in order to remain level. As a result of this particular feature, it doubles as a table-top candlestick.

Not long after I left, I began regretting not buying the sister piece; though I'd already spent two days of my food budget on the first one. For eight years, I regretted not buying that matching piece, until finally, I opened my shop, Studio Nouveau. On my first buying trip, I raced with great anticipation, back to the little old man in San Gimignano to see if, just maybe, the sister candlestick was waiting for me.

Much to my surprise, it was!!! The little old man told me that this was a reproduction of an Etruscan candlestick...now being reproduced in Florence.
It remains a personal favorite of all my hunts for "Objects of Beauty".

I use six of them at home...one on each side of my arched window, two on the tables at my bedside, one in the kitchen, and one in the living room, which I carry when the power goes out, or during my candlelit dinner parties.

These are my favorite gift to give couples...because they appear to be loved, universally, by men and women. They also come in silver-plate. (Find them listed separately.)

Alexander`s Wife Alexander was a poet, a master archer, and quantum mechanics theorist. His wife? she played the cello. She wore velvet when she wasn't riding her horse or flinging arrows with Alexander. Regularly, they would dress up for one another. It didn't have to be a special occassion...they simply enjoyed adorning themselves for their long chats, as they contemplated the cosmos, listened to the crickets, or kissed. She carried her lipstick, the small bone comb that Alexander made her, and a finely embroidered green handkerchief in her Black Art Nouveau purse. It was another gift you would have thought Alexander had brought from a Parisian antique dealer. In fact, it was designed by the famous mother, daughter team, Maya. Cast in black acrylic resin, with lace-like accents in antique gold and green.

Half Size 5 Flame Candleabra This darling little antique brass candleabra is great for a smaller or side table, in the bathroom or on your desk or bedside. It dates back to the 18th Century, and is adorned with flower and leaf motifs, characteristic of the period.

I Belong I was standing on a ladder, washing my window when he walked into Studio Nouveau.
His silver hair was pony-tailed back. He wore Ray Bans...inside the store! Of course one cannot help but wonder if the guy was practicing mystery...perhaps he had a hangover? About a half hour latter, he came out. I was already enchanted...and still am!

His eyes are a soft brown that
has seen a lot, and synthesized that lot into an arsenal of fabulous stories I apparently
have a deficit of.

We spoke of everything from hunting a boar with rifle vs. bow and arrow, to a paper he wrote as a youth on Spinster English, to the lack of bolo-ties in Texas. I even taught him the fine art of eating an exotic chocolate bar. He seemed to like that!

Now, I can't get his voice out of my head...nor John Denver's "I belong...in West Virginia..." Indeed, that is where this anomaly in these parts originated. And so I count the minutes when I will be blessed by another visit from James.

Made in Italy, of Antique brass, this horse clock is something you might see in West Virginia. With its stallion atop a mountain...surly in Appalachia, what a great way to hold the time.

A quartz movement frees you from having to wind it.

Above the rolling hills of Tuscany, San Gimignano was a thriving Etruscan center in 200-300BC. It began its life as a town in the 10th century taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes.
